KCWC Day Three: Sailboat Top

This shirt better be glad that it turned out cute because I was   t h i s   close to tossing it into the trash can!!  Everything was smooth sailing (no pun intended) until the VERY last step.  I was trying to turn the hem facing and topstitch it in place...after the second attempt I broke down and used fusible light-weight hem tape.  I think I made a new best friend.

The fabric is %100 Rayon Challis.  It is very soft but also very slinky.  The only difficultly that I ran across was getting my hems to look nice.  If I make anymore of this pattern I will definitely make a size three-- size two fits but won't fit for very long.

I used some vintage red glass buttons that my mom got at an estate sale.  I really like the little bit of interest to break up that rose pink.  I wish I had waited on the button holes and gone out to get matching thread.  From far away that white thread doesn't stand out too badly but up close it drives me a little crazy!

It is so much fun to make her clothes and for the time being she really loves to wear them!  I will be sad if/when that changes.

This last picture is so blurry but I just love how she is totally trying to be funny in this picture!  She is 23 months old and her little personality is just starting to really come out.

    1. thank you! i'll definitely keep an eye out for your version. i love this pattern too. i have only done it in a knit and this rayon challis...i'm thinking i need to try it in a woven fabric so that i can love it without having the frustration that i encountered this go around! happy sewing :)

    2. Cotton is definitely easier to make this in, but it is harder to get on. Once it is on, the fit is great.

  2. Super cute! I love the red buttons. You did an awesome job, that fabric must have been an absolute nightmare to work with.

    1. Thanks Robin! It was not a fun fabric but I am happy with the end result. I know next time that I just need to suck it up and use some hem tape the first try.

  3. This is such a cute top! And your daughter is adorable! I was going to say the rayon would make it a nice cool top in the summer, but then realised she will have probably grown out of it by the time your summer comes around so that's not very helpful, is it?! Good tip with the stay tape, I fought with a similar fabric on my last project and it didn't occur to me to use something to make it easier.

    1. aw thank you. she is a lot of fun! that is the blessing and curse of making kids clothes...they last like one season (especially with a kid that is really pretty big for her age and grows so fast!) but if they aren't that cute there isn't any guilt when she can't wear them anymore :)
hoping by the time summer comes around i will think ahead enough for an entire wardrobe of handmades for her. here's to lofty goals!
